Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah briefed Prime Minister Narendra Modi about the catastrophic flooding and landslides triggered by relentless rains in the Jammu region, expressing gratitude for the Centre’s commitment to ongoing support. The deluge, which battered Jammu province on Tuesday, caused widespread destruction, including 32 deaths from a landslide on the Mata Vaishno Devi shrine route and four others in Doda district, alongside washed-out roads, bridges, and inundated low-lying areas.
Abdullah, after touring flood-ravaged zones along the Tawi River, told reporters that he detailed the crisis to Modi, thanking him for deploying National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams. “The Prime Minister assured all support to the people of J-K,” he said, noting a slight reprieve on Wednesday as rains ceased and water levels began receding. Posting on X, Abdullah reiterated his gratitude for Modi’s pledge of continued assistance to address the crisis in the worst-hit areas of Jammu, Samba, Kathua, Udhampur, Doda, and Kishtwar.
The Chief Minister highlighted significant infrastructure damage, including the fourth Tawi River bridge, previously affected in the 2014 floods. “We need expert teams to investigate why this spot keeps getting hit and prevent future damage,” he said, emphasizing the recurring threat to riverbank homes during heavy rains. Abdullah stressed the urgency of relocating residents from flood-prone areas, noting, “Houses along rivers face danger every time floods strike. We must address this after managing the current crisis.”

While relief operations have gained momentum with receding waters, Abdullah reported that districts like Rajouri and Poonch escaped severe damage. He promised a comprehensive damage assessment and a relief package once the immediate crisis subsides. The administration is prioritizing the restoration of essential services and ensuring safety, urging residents to avoid flood channels and vulnerable zones as recovery efforts continue.
