Omar Abdullah Backs Magisterial Probe Into Ganderbal Encounter
Omar Abdullah supports probe into Ganderbal encounter, seeks swift inquiry.
Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Monday justified the probe ordered by the Lieutenant Governor into the recent Ganderbal encounter, while calling for a swift and transparent investigation. He refrained from engaging in the debate over whether the inquiry should be judicial or magisterial, instead emphasizing the need for timely action.
The encounter took place on March 31 in the Arhama forests of Ganderbal, where the Army said it had killed a suspected militant identified as Rashid Ahmad Mughal, a local resident. However, the family of the deceased has disputed the claim, alleging that he had no links to militancy and describing the encounter as “fake.” They have also demanded the return of his body for proper burial.
Addressing reporters, Abdullah highlighted the procedural challenges associated with judicial inquiries, noting that they often face delays due to the unavailability of sitting judges and restrictions on appointing them. He said even appointing retired judges is not a straightforward process, which can further slow down proceedings.

Advocating for a quicker resolution, the Chief Minister supported the magisterial probe ordered by the Lieutenant Governor, stating that such an approach would allow authorities to begin the investigation without delay. He stressed that the truth should be established promptly and presented before the public.
In his remarks, Abdullah also touched upon international developments, referring to recent statements by the United States President on the situation in Iran. He questioned the appropriateness of the language used, emphasizing that public communication from high offices should maintain dignity and restraint.
Expressing concern over the broader geopolitical situation, Abdullah warned about the consequences of prolonged conflict, stating that extended tensions could have far-reaching implications. He reiterated that swift resolution of both local and global issues remains crucial to maintaining stability and public confidence.
