‘War Must End Soon’: Omar Abdullah Urges India to Push for Peace

Omar Abdullah urges PM Modi to leverage India’s international relations for West Asia peace efforts.

Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Tuesday called for an immediate end to the ongoing conflict in West Asia, emphasizing that Prime Minister Narendra Modi is uniquely positioned to help de-escalate tensions due to India’s strong relations with key countries in the region. Speaking to reporters outside the Assembly complex, Abdullah said, “We want the war to end as soon as possible. The role that the Prime Minister can play may not be possible for anyone else because of his good relations with all these countries.”

Abdullah highlighted India’s diplomatic ties with nations such as Iran, Israel, and the United States as a potential leverage point to ease tensions. “If those relationships can be used to make some progress and help de-escalate the situation, it would be a good thing,” he noted, pointing to the complexities of the conflict and cautioning that any escalation could be difficult to manage.

On the possibility of Pakistan contributing as a mediator, the Chief Minister said that any effort aimed at ending the conflict should be welcomed. He explained that Pakistan has been engaging with both Iran and the United States, and if such involvement helps stop the war, it should not be opposed. “We want the war to stop. If any country can play a role in that, it should. And if we can play an even better role, then we should do so,” Abdullah added.

Abdullah also referenced concerns from a recent U.S. report, warning that attacks by terror groups like Lashkar-e-Taiba and Jaish-e-Mohammed in India are not unlikely. He reiterated that the ongoing conflict is “unjust” and stressed the wider regional and global consequences of continued hostilities, urging India to leverage its diplomatic relationships to promote peace, stability, and secure shipping routes in the region.
