Om Birla Says Ideal Assembly Should Focus On Solutions, Addresses Bengal MLAs
Om Birla urges constructive focus in legislative proceedings.
Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla on Friday said that the primary objective of any ideal state Assembly should not only be to debate issues but also to focus on finding practical solutions to the problems faced by the public. He made the remarks while addressing a two-day orientation programme for newly elected legislators in the West Bengal Assembly, stressing the importance of constructive dialogue in democratic institutions.
Speaking at the inauguration, Birla said that MLAs are closely connected to the hopes and expectations of the people they represent, and their role is directly linked to the development of the state. He emphasised that legislative bodies should function as platforms where meaningful discussions take place and where efforts are made to resolve issues affecting citizens. He also urged legislators to study past debates and legislative discussions thoroughly to improve their understanding of governance.
The Lok Sabha Speaker encouraged lawmakers to base their participation in Assembly proceedings on verified information and data-driven analysis. He said elected representatives should continuously expand their knowledge and remain engaged in a lifelong learning process. According to him, this approach would help legislators better serve their constituencies and contribute more effectively to policy discussions.

He advised MLAs to stay updated on national and international issues and to make use of available digital resources to enhance their understanding of governance and policymaking.
Urging legislators to spend more time within the Assembly to observe and learn, even when they are not actively participating in debates, Birla said that consistent engagement would strengthen their understanding of legislative processes. He also praised the leadership of the newly elected Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, noting his vision and commitment to working within the framework of democracy as he begins his administrative role in the state.
