IMD Forecasts Heavy Rainfall In Tamil Nadu, Northeast India And Sub-Himalayan Bengal
IMD warns of heavy monsoon rains across multiple Indian regions.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a heavy rainfall alert for Tamil Nadu, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, and several parts of Northeast India over the next seven days, as the Southwest Monsoon continues to strengthen and advance across the country. The weather agency said that widespread rainfall activity is expected between June 9 and June 14, with isolated spells of very heavy rain likely in multiple regions.
According to the IMD, heavy to very heavy rainfall ranging between 7 cm and 20 cm is forecast over Kerala, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Northeast India, and Sub-Himalayan West Bengal during this period. The department noted that the monsoon system is becoming more active and is gradually covering additional parts of central and eastern India, bringing widespread precipitation across both southern and northeastern states.
Meteorologists have also indicated favourable conditions for further advancement of the monsoon in the coming two to three days. The system is expected to extend into more parts of the central Arabian Sea as well as states such as Maharashtra, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, and remaining areas of Tamil Nadu. Additionally, rainfall activity is likely to spread into the Bay of Bengal region, including parts of Odisha, Chhattisgarh, West Bengal, Sikkim, and the remaining northeastern states.

In Tamil Nadu, several districts are likely to experience frequent and sustained downpours over the next week, raising concerns over localised waterlogging in low-lying areas. Authorities have advised residents to remain cautious as intermittent heavy rainfall may disrupt normal daily activities and transport services in some regions.
Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim are expected to see widespread rain, particularly in foothill and mountainous areas, where heavy to very heavy rainfall spells could trigger difficult travel conditions. The IMD has cautioned that intense rainfall events in these regions may increase the risk of water accumulation, landslides, and disruptions to road connectivity.
In Northeast India, states including Assam, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura are likely to receive consistent rainfall throughout the week. The weather department has warned that some areas may experience intense downpours, and has urged local administrations to remain prepared for possible weather-related disruptions as the monsoon continues to progress.
