Odisha Student’s Tragic Death After Self-Immolation Sparks Outrage
A college student’s desperate act over alleged harassment ends in tragedy, prompting promises of justice.
A second-year Integrated B.Ed student from Fakir Mohan (Autonomous) College in Balasore, Odisha, succumbed to her injuries at AIIMS Bhubaneswar on Monday night, three days after setting herself ablaze in a desperate protest against alleged sexual harassment by a professor. The student, who suffered 95% burns, passed away despite intensive medical efforts, including IV fluids, antibiotics, and mechanical ventilation in the Burns ICU.
The tragic incident, which occurred on Saturday, stemmed from the college’s alleged inaction against the accused professor. Initially treated at Balasore district hospital, the student was shifted to AIIMS Bhubaneswar for advanced care but was declared clinically dead at 11:46 PM on July 14.
Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi expressed profound grief, stating on X, “Despite exhaustive medical efforts, we could not save her. I assure the family that the guilty will face the harshest punishment.” He confirmed issuing directives to authorities to ensure justice. President Droupadi Murmu, present at AIIMS for its 5th convocation, made an unscheduled visit to the burn unit to inquire about the student’s condition.
