Odisha Speaker’s Plea: Will MLAs Ensure Smooth Monsoon Session?

Speaker seeks MLA cooperation for Odisha Assembly’s monsoon session.

Odisha Assembly Speaker Surama Padhy convened an all-party meeting in Bhubaneswar on Tuesday, urging members from both ruling and opposition parties to cooperate for the smooth functioning of the upcoming monsoon session. The session, set to begin on Thursday and run until September 25 with a break on September 21, promises to address critical issues facing the state, and Padhy’s call for unity underscores the importance of constructive dialogue.

Speaking to the media after the meeting, Padhy emphasized her appeal for collaboration, stating, “I sought cooperation from all members for the smooth conduct of the assembly session.” The session’s opening day will be marked by a solemn tribute to Biju Janata Dal (BJD) MLA Rajendra Dholakia, who passed away earlier this month, setting a reflective tone. From September 19, the House will dive into substantive business, including adjournment motions, calling attention notices, questions, and legislative bills, as outlined by the Speaker.

BJD chief whip Pramila Mallik, who attended the meeting, affirmed her party’s commitment to cooperate within the framework of constitutional norms. She revealed that the BJD plans to spotlight issues affecting women, students, Scheduled Castes/Scheduled Tribes, and farmers during the session. However, the party’s detailed strategy will be finalized at a legislative party meeting scheduled for Wednesday, Mallik noted.

Similarly, Congress Legislative Party (CLP) leader Rama Chandra Kadam expressed willingness to work with the Speaker to ensure smooth proceedings, emphasizing adherence to established provisions. The Congress strategy will also be shaped during a separate meeting on Wednesday, indicating that both opposition parties are gearing up for robust participation.

The monsoon session comes at a critical juncture for Odisha, with pressing concerns like agricultural challenges, social welfare, and regional development likely to dominate discussions. Padhy’s proactive outreach signals an intent to foster bipartisanship, but the success of the session will hinge on the willingness of MLAs to prioritize public interest over political rivalries. As the state braces for intense debates, all eyes are on whether the assembly can deliver meaningful outcomes for Odisha’s citizens.
