Northeast Unites for Epic 2027 National Games: All 8 States to Co-Host!

Eight Northeast states to co-host 39th National Games in 2027, promoting regional unity and sports development.

In an unprecedented move, the Central Government has proposed that all eight northeastern states—Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Mizoram, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Sikkim, and Tripura—co-host the 39th National Games in 2027, a plan that received unanimous support during a regional meeting in Shillong on Saturday. The closed-door session, chaired by Meghalaya Sports Minister Shakliar Warjri and co-chaired by Arunachal Pradesh Sports Minister Kento Jini, brought together sports ministers, secretaries, and state Olympic association representatives to discuss this collaborative hosting model.

John F. Kharshiing, working president of the Meghalaya State Olympics Association (MSOA), revealed that the proposal, initiated by the Ministry of Home Affairs, aims to foster regional cooperation and showcase the Northeast’s rich sporting potential. Originally slated to host the Games alone, Meghalaya embraced the multi-state approach to promote unity and enhance the region’s sporting infrastructure. The Northeast previously hosted the National Games in 1999 (Manipur) and 2007 (Assam).

Delegates from the eight states exchanged ideas on coordinating efforts for this ambitious hosting model, which is expected to boost youth engagement and elevate sports facilities across the region. Warjri emphasized the event’s potential to inspire young athletes and strengthen the Northeast’s sporting legacy.
