Newly Inaugurated Sairang Station Found Covered in Garbage

Viral video exposes Sairang station littered post-inauguration.

A viral video has ignited widespread outrage after capturing the Sairang Railway Station in Mizoram just 24 hours after its grand inauguration by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, revealing it buried under piles of garbage and discarded food. The footage, shared by vlogger Udesh Das on Instagram under the title "Indians Have Zero Civic Sense," has amassed over 1.7 lakh views, sparking a heated debate on social media about public responsibility and national pride.

The station, part of the newly launched 51.38-km Bairabi-Sairang railway project, was virtually inaugurated by PM Modi alongside three new trains, connecting Aizawl as the fourth Northeast capital city to the rail network after Guwahati, Agartala, and Itanagar. In the reel, Das expresses deep frustration while filming the littered carpets and debris left from the event. "Look at this. This is the condition of the railway station after 24 hours of inauguration. People have littered everywhere. Who eats and leaves plates like this? I am angry with my people," he says, highlighting the absence of waste in bins despite their availability during the ceremony.

Das further laments, "This is why Indians are abused abroad. The inauguration took place yesterday. They place dustbins everywhere during these events, but people are littering everywhere. This is not just about this station. It's about our civic sense. This is a national shame." His caption pleads, "Disheartening sight at Sairang Railway Station, Mizoram, just inaugurated yesterday! Let's take pride in keeping our stations clean. A plea to all Indians: Let's maintain cleanliness & respect our public spaces."

The video's virality has prompted a flood of comments from users echoing Das's sentiments. One commenter stated, "This is our country, we have to keep it clean. Every citizen should consider the country as their home. Nobody spreads garbage in their home." Another vented, "Britishers should rule us for another 100 years to teach us civic sense. As an Indian, I really feel ashamed." A third added, "True Indian habit. If a penalty is imposed, they will cry. This is our country, we should all keep it clean."

In response to the uproar, Indian Railways quickly addressed the issue on social media, stating, "For necessary action escalated to the concerned official @Drm_lmg_nfr," while tagging the Divisional Railway Manager of the Lumding Division. The prompt acknowledgment highlights the railways' commitment to maintaining the new infrastructure.

This incident serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing challenge of fostering civic responsibility in public spaces. As Mizoram celebrates its enhanced connectivity, the episode underscores the collective effort needed to preserve such developments for future generations.
