NC Leader Sheikh Mustafa Kamal Passes Away, Political Leaders Pay Tributes
Senior NC leader Sheikh Mustafa Kamal passes away.
Veteran National Conference (NC) leader Sheikh Mustafa Kamal, former minister and younger brother of NC president Farooq Abdullah, passed away on Tuesday after a prolonged illness in Srinagar. The 83-year-old leader breathed his last at Paras Super Speciality Hospital, where he had been undergoing treatment.
Sheikh Mustafa Kamal was a prominent figure in Jammu and Kashmir politics and was the son of legendary Kashmiri leader Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah. He was also the uncle of Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah. Throughout his political career, he remained closely associated with the National Conference and played an important role in the party’s activities.
A qualified doctor, Mustafa Kamal completed his MBBS from Sawai Mansingh Medical College in Jaipur in 1962. He later entered politics and served as a minister in Jammu and Kashmir governments formed in 1983, 1987 and 1996. He was also a member of the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Council from 1983 to 1987 and represented the assembly constituency from 1987 to 2002.

Known for his simple lifestyle and approachable nature, Mustafa Kamal was respected for his connection with ordinary people. Despite belonging to one of Kashmir’s most influential political families, he was known as a soft-spoken leader who remained accessible to residents and focused on public service throughout his life.
Mustafa Kamal spent much of his later years in the Shadimarg forest area near Tangmarg, where he continued helping local residents. People often approached him for assistance with government-related issues, and he was known for helping patients arrange medical appointments with specialists within Jammu and Kashmir and outside the region.
The veteran leader, who remained unmarried, dedicated his life to the party and public service. He is expected to be laid to rest at the ancestral graveyard of the Sheikh family in Soura area of Srinagar. Following news of his death, political leaders and thousands of people across Jammu and Kashmir expressed grief and conveyed condolences to Farooq Abdullah, Omar Abdullah and the bereaved family.
