Naxalism Nears Extinction in India, Says Rajnath Singh

Security forces' efforts turn red corridor into growth corridor.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh announced that Left Wing Extremism (LWE), commonly known as Naxalism, is on the brink of becoming history in India, thanks to the relentless efforts of police and security forces. Speaking at the Police Commemoration Day event at the National Police Memorial in Delhi’s Chanakyapuri, Singh laid a wreath and saluted the ceremonial guard, honoring the sacrifices of security personnel.

"The Maoists, once defiant against the state, are now surrendering and joining the mainstream of development," Singh stated, highlighting the success of anti-Naxal operations. He credited the coordinated efforts of the police, CRPF, BSF, and local administrations for transforming regions previously plagued by Naxalism into hubs of education and growth.

Areas once notorious as the "red corridor" in states like Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and Maharashtra have seen remarkable progress. Schools that were shuttered have reopened, roads have been built, and fear has given way to hope. The government has set a target to completely eradicate Naxalism by March 2026, a goal Singh believes is within reach due to the "very significant" contributions of security forces.

Singh also emphasized the Modi government’s commitment to modernizing police forces, providing resources and budgets to enhance their capabilities. He stressed the importance of coordination among security agencies to optimize these resources, noting that modern policing involves not only combating crime but also managing public perception.

Police Commemoration Day is observed annually to honor the memory of 10 CRPF personnel killed in a 1959 ambush by Chinese troops in Ladakh’s Hot Spring area. Singh’s address underscored the bravery and dedication of India’s security forces in tackling both external and internal threats, paving the way for a safer and more prosperous nation.
