Nagpur Braces for Floods as IMD Issues Red Alert
Schools shut, highways closed amid heavy rains
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for Nagpur and Wardha districts, forecasting heavy rainfall and thunderstorms, leading to the closure of all schools and colleges in Nagpur on Wednesday. The alert follows intense downpours, with Nagpur recording 172.2 mm of rainfall in just nine hours from Tuesday evening to Wednesday morning.
Nagpur Collector Vipin Itankar cited the risk of a flood-like situation, with overflowing drains and rivers causing several state highways to be shut down. “To prevent any mishaps, we’ve declared a holiday for educational institutions,” Itankar stated in an official order. Many roads across the district’s talukas are inundated, disrupting traffic and raising safety concerns.
The IMD also issued an orange alert for Amravati and Yavatmal, and a yellow alert for Akola, Washim, Buldhana, Chandrapur, Bhandara, and Gondia in the Vidarbha region, signaling widespread weather risks. The Regional Meteorological Centre warned of thunderstorms with lightning and moderate to heavy rainfall in affected areas.
