Devastating Floods Ravage Nepal-China Border, Killing 9
The Bhotekoshi River, swollen by relentless rainfall across the border, carried away nine individuals
A catastrophic flash flood triggered by heavy monsoon rains in Tibet has claimed at least nine lives and left 20 people missing in Nepal’s Rasuwa district. The deluge, which struck early Tuesday, swept away the critical Friendship Bridge (Miteri Bridge) linking Nepal and China, severely disrupting trade and infrastructure.
The Bhotekoshi River, swollen by relentless rainfall across the border, carried away nine individuals, with their bodies later recovered downstream in Dhading and Chitwan districts. Among the 20 missing are three Nepali security personnel and six Chinese nationals, according to Nepal’s National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority. Rescue operations, involving army helicopters and over 95 personnel, have saved 57 people so far, but adverse weather is hampering efforts.
The flood devastated four hydropower plants, cutting 211 MW from Nepal’s power grid, and destroyed 23 cargo containers, six trucks, and 35 electric vehicles. Experts suspect a glacial lake outburst in Tibet as a possible cause, with Nepal’s weather department collaborating with Sentinel Asia to investigate.
