Trade Unions' Strike: Nationwide Strike Disrupts Jharkhand’s Key Sectors
Coal, banking, postal services hit hard
A nationwide strike led by 10 central trade unions under the Joint Platform of Trade Unions has brought coal, banking, insurance, and postal services in Jharkhand to a standstill. The strike, protesting the central government’s policies, particularly the four new labour codes, has garnered support from local trade unions and Left parties.
Suvendu Sen, general secretary of AITUC’s Jharkhand unit, reported a complete halt in coal production and dispatch, with significant disruptions in banking and public sector operations. “The workers are united in opposing policies that undermine their rights,” Sen stated.
In Ranchi, two rallies are planned for 11:30 AM, starting from Sainik Market and Kutchery, converging at Albert Ekka Chowk for a public meeting. The unions are pushing a 17-point charter of demands, including the repeal of the controversial labour codes.

CPI state secretary Mahendra Pathak urged small and large vendors to join the protests against the government’s “anti-worker policies.” While the strike’s impact is evident in key sectors, its effect on Ranchi’s streets and markets remains limited so far.
The strike, originally set for May 20, was deferred after the Pahalgam terror attack and Operation Sindoor. As workers rally for their demands, Jharkhand braces for further disruptions in essential services.
