Murshidabad Begins Construction of Controversial Babri Masjid Replica Today

Construction of the controversial Babri Masjid replica starts today in Murshidabad, Bengal.

Construction work is set to begin on Wednesday at a site in Beldanga, Murshidabad, where a replica of the demolished Babri Masjid is being planned, nearly two months after the foundation stone for the project was laid. Preparations were underway at the site on Tuesday, with earthmovers deployed and arrangements made for a Quran recitation ceremony expected to precede the formal start of construction.

The initiative is being led by Humayun Kabir, a suspended Trinamool Congress MLA who has since formed the Janata Unnayan Party. Kabir had laid the foundation stone for the structure on December 6 last year, a date associated with the 1992 demolition of the Babri Masjid in Ayodhya. On Monday, he shared the proposed mosque design on social media and confirmed that construction would commence following prayers.

According to Kabir, around 1,200 people are expected to participate in Quran recitation beginning at 10 am before work officially starts. Speaking to reporters, he said the project would move ahead despite political opposition. Kabir has publicly criticised West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee following his suspension and indicated that he is no longer aligned with the Trinamool Congress leadership.

The announcement has drawn sharp reactions from political leaders outside the state. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath reiterated that the Babri structure “will never be rebuilt”, asserting that such efforts were futile. Responding to these remarks, Kabir said the opposition was politically motivated and questioned why there was resistance to the replica when no objections were raised during the construction of the Ram Temple in Ayodhya.

The controversy has intensified with a right-wing group calling for supporters in Uttar Pradesh to march to Murshidabad. Meanwhile, Kabir has announced a three-day march titled the “Babri Yatra”, scheduled to begin Thursday from Palashi in Murshidabad to Itahar in Dinajpur. He said the march aims to send a message to those opposing the project, underscoring the political sensitivity surrounding the development.
