Mumbai's Monsoon Wait Extends as Heat, Humidity Grip City Until Late June

Mumbai endures heat and humidity as monsoon arrival extends to late June.

Mumbai continues to await the arrival of the southwest monsoon, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) indicating that hot and humid conditions are likely to persist over the city and surrounding regions for at least the next 48 hours. Despite expectations of an early seasonal onset, updated forecasts suggest that the monsoon’s advance towards the financial capital has been delayed once again.

According to the IMD’s regional centre, Mumbai recorded a temperature of around 32°C with humidity levels near 63% in the morning hours. Winds were reported from the west-southwest at approximately 13 km/h. The department has forecast partly cloudy skies over Mumbai and its suburbs, while warning that oppressive heat and humidity will continue to make conditions uncomfortable.

Private weather agencies have issued similar outlooks. AccuWeather has projected mostly sunny and hot conditions through the day, with maximum temperatures potentially reaching 36°C and night temperatures remaining high at around 29°C. Only isolated late-night showers are possible. Authorities have also cautioned residents about the risk of dehydration and heat-related stress for those spending extended time outdoors.

Skymet Weather has placed the probability of rainfall at around 20%, with temperatures expected to fluctuate between 27°C and 32°C. Humidity levels are likely to vary sharply from 58% to 92%, increasing the “feels-like” temperature despite partial cloud cover. Wind speeds may strengthen slightly in the evening before easing again at night.

Some local weather observers have suggested that moisture inflow could begin strengthening between June 20 and June 21, potentially improving conditions for monsoon progression. However, arrival estimates remain mixed, with projections ranging between June 22 and June 25 depending on the movement of monsoon currents along the west coast.

For now, meteorological agencies continue to advise caution as heat stress conditions persist across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. While isolated showers cannot be ruled out, sustained rainfall is unlikely until stronger monsoon currents establish themselves, extending the city’s wait for seasonal relief.
