Mumbai Road Caves in Amid Heavy Rain, Swallows Vehicle in Bhandup
Mumbai road collapses amid rain, vehicle falls into excavation pit.
A massive road cave-in in Mumbai’s Bhandup West caused a vehicle to fall into an excavation pit on Saturday as heavy rainfall continued to affect the city. The incident occurred on Lal Bahadur Shastri Marg, where a section of the road suddenly collapsed and nearby trees also fell. No injuries or casualties were reported, while authorities quickly barricaded the affected area to prevent further accidents.
The Mumbai Fire Brigade received alerts about the incident at around 1.25 pm and again at 2.40 pm. Officials said the road gave way at a location where excavation work was already underway, causing one vehicle to plunge into the collapsed section and become stranded inside the pit. Visuals from the scene showed the scale of the cave-in and the vehicle trapped below the road surface.
Authorities from Mumbai’s S Ward began rescue and safety measures soon after receiving information about the collapse. The damaged stretch was immediately barricaded to keep pedestrians and motorists away from the unstable area. Civic teams also started assessing the extent of the damage and working to secure the location as concerns remained over the possibility of further ground movement following persistent rainfall.

Official reports confirmed that no one was injured in the incident. The exact cause of the road collapse is expected to be investigated, particularly because excavation work was underway at the site when the cave-in occurred. Authorities are likely to examine whether the ongoing construction activity, weakened soil conditions and continuous monsoon rainfall contributed to the sudden failure of the road surface.
The incident occurred as Mumbai continued to experience heavy rain, which has caused waterlogging and travel disruptions in several parts of the city. Persistent rainfall during the monsoon can weaken roads and surrounding ground, especially near construction and excavation sites. The latest incident has again raised concerns over infrastructure safety and the risks faced by commuters during periods of intense rainfall.
A video showing the aftermath of the cave-in, including the vehicle trapped inside the collapsed portion of the road, circulated widely online and drew attention to the incident. Many social media users expressed concern about road conditions and public safety during the monsoon season. Authorities have urged residents to remain cautious, follow official safety instructions and avoid unnecessary travel through areas affected by heavy rainfall or infrastructure damage.
