Mumbai Rains Trigger Disruptions In Local Train Services Amid IMD Red Alert Today

IMD red alert disrupts Mumbai local train services today.

Heavy rainfall continued to lash Mumbai on Saturday, triggering waterlogging in several parts of the city after the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a red alert for Mumbai and neighbouring districts of Thane, Palghar and Raigad. The weather department has forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall at multiple locations, with isolated areas likely to receive extremely heavy downpours due to an active monsoon system affecting the region.

Despite the intense rain, suburban train operations—Mumbai’s lifeline—remained largely functional, although delays were reported on some routes. According to updates shared by the Central Railway, services across most corridors continued to run with precautionary measures in place. Officials advised commuters to remain cautious while travelling as tracks in certain low-lying sections were affected by water accumulation.

On the Central Railway network, the Main Line connecting CSMT–Kalyan–Karjat–Khopoli–Kasara was operating with trains running at reduced speeds as a safety measure. The Harbour Line (CSMT–Panvel–Goregaon), Trans-Harbour Line (Thane–Vashi–Panvel) and Port Line (Belapur–Nerul–Uran) were reported to be functioning normally. Railway authorities said services were being closely monitored to ensure passenger safety amid the heavy rainfall conditions.

Western Railway also confirmed that suburban services between Churchgate and Dahanu Road were running, though delays of around 15 to 20 minutes were reported due to waterlogging between Nalasopara and Virar. In a public advisory, officials urged commuters to plan their journeys in advance and account for possible disruptions. The Mahim–Goregaon route was reported to be operating normally despite the adverse weather conditions affecting other sections.

The heavy showers have led to significant waterlogging in several parts of Mumbai, slowing vehicular movement and causing inconvenience to daily commuters. Low-lying areas have been particularly affected as drainage systems struggled to cope with the sudden surge in rainfall intensity. Civic teams have been deployed in multiple locations to manage flooding, clear blocked drains and assist with traffic regulation.

The IMD has cautioned that the red alert remains in effect, with the possibility of continued heavy to very heavy rainfall over the coming hours. Authorities have advised residents to avoid unnecessary travel, remain alert to weather updates and follow safety instructions issued by local agencies. Emergency services are on standby as the city braces for further spells of intense monsoon activity.
