Mumbai-Pune Missing Link Inaugurated By Fadnavis To Improve Highway Connectivity
Mumbai-Pune Expressway Missing Link opens, promising faster travel and improved safety for commuters.
Devendra Fadnavis inaugurated the long-awaited “Missing Link” section of the Mumbai–Pune Expressway on Friday, marking a major milestone in improving connectivity between Mumbai and Pune. The new stretch is expected to significantly reduce travel time, ease congestion, and enhance road safety on one of India’s busiest expressways.
The Missing Link project has been developed as an alternative alignment to bypass accident-prone and heavily congested sections of the existing route. Built with a combination of long tunnels, elevated viaducts, and improved road geometry, the project is designed to ensure smoother traffic flow even during peak hours and heavy monsoon conditions. Authorities say the upgrade will provide more predictable travel times and reduce the frequency of bottlenecks that have long plagued commuters.
During the inauguration, Fadnavis was seen driving a Mercedes-AMG G 63 along the newly opened stretch, highlighting the expressway’s suitability for high-speed, stable driving conditions. The SUV, known for its luxury and performance capabilities, symbolically underscored the engineering standards of the new corridor. Officials noted that the Missing Link would be opened for public use from the morning of May 2, allowing commuters to experience the upgraded route.

The Missing Link has been considered one of the most challenging infrastructure upgrades on the expressway due to its complex terrain and engineering requirements. The project includes advanced tunneling systems and reinforced structures designed to improve all-weather reliability. By eliminating sharp curves and reducing elevation-related slowdowns, the stretch is expected to enhance both safety and efficiency for thousands of daily commuters traveling between the two major cities.
The Mumbai–Pune Expressway serves as a vital economic artery connecting Maharashtra’s financial capital with its industrial and IT hub. The completion of the Missing Link is expected to further strengthen trade, tourism, and daily commuter movement, while also reducing accident risks that have historically been associated with the older alignment. Authorities believe the upgrade will set new standards for expressway infrastructure in the country.
With the inauguration complete, the focus now shifts to public adoption and monitoring of traffic patterns on the new stretch. Officials expect the project to significantly decongest existing routes and improve long-term mobility between Mumbai and Pune. The development is being viewed as a major step forward in modernising Maharashtra’s transport infrastructure and enhancing regional connectivity.
