Mumbai Issued Red Alert As Heavy Rain Continues, Civic Body Advises Caution
Mumbai issues red alert as heavy rain continues across city.
Mumbai remained on high alert on Sunday after the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a red alert warning of continued heavy to extremely heavy rainfall across the city and surrounding regions. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has urged residents to stay indoors and step out only if absolutely necessary as intense monsoon activity continues to affect normal life.
The city witnessed heavy overnight rainfall that gradually eased by morning, but officials warned that more intense spells were still likely during the day. The IMD forecast includes the possibility of extremely heavy showers at isolated locations along with gusty winds reaching speeds of 55–65 kmph across Mumbai and its suburbs, raising concerns over waterlogging and infrastructure strain.
According to civic data, several areas in Mumbai recorded over 200 mm of rainfall in the last 24 hours, with some locations crossing the 300 mm mark. The BMC’s automatic rain gauge network reported the highest rainfall at the Building Proposal Office in Vikhroli West with 310.6 mm, followed by Colaba Pumping Station at 306.6 mm and Tagore Nagar Municipal School in Vikhroli at 301.8 mm, highlighting the intensity of the downpour.

Despite the severe weather conditions, public transport services including Mumbai Metro and BEST buses were reported to be operating normally in the morning. However, suburban railway services experienced delays due to water accumulation on tracks in certain stretches. Authorities continued to monitor the situation closely and advised commuters to check updates before travelling.
The BMC has also issued a public advisory asking citizens to remain cautious, especially in low-lying and coastal areas, as high tide conditions are expected to further complicate drainage. A high tide of 4.19 metres is expected at 3:22 pm on Sunday, followed by another tide of 3.51 metres in the early hours of Monday, increasing the risk of flooding in vulnerable zones.
The heavy rainfall has already disrupted life across Mumbai and neighbouring regions including Thane, Palghar, Navi Mumbai and parts of Pune, where landslides, road closures and evacuations were reported. Officials said emergency helplines remain active, and citizens are being encouraged to report incidents promptly as the city continues to brace for further rain activity.
