IMD Issues Red Alert For Mumbai, Thane, Palghar Amid Very Heavy Rain Threat

IMD warns of intense rainfall likely affecting Mumbai region.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Friday issued a red alert for Mumbai, Thane, and Palghar, warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall with the possibility of extremely heavy showers at isolated locations over the next 24 hours. The alert comes as the monsoon strengthens along the Konkan coast, raising concerns over potential flooding and disruption in the region.

According to the IMD, intense rainfall is expected to persist over the weekend, with several parts of Mumbai and adjoining districts likely to experience continuous downpours. The weather department has cautioned that such conditions may lead to waterlogging, traffic disruptions, and delays in public transport services, particularly in low-lying and flood-prone areas.

The warning follows a spell of heavy overnight rain that already affected normal life in parts of Mumbai, where residents reported slow vehicular movement and water accumulation in several localities. Local train services also faced minor delays on certain routes as authorities monitored the impact of the rainfall on suburban rail operations.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has urged citizens to remain vigilant, especially during high tide conditions that could worsen flooding in vulnerable coastal and low-lying zones. Officials have advised people to avoid unnecessary travel and stay away from beaches, open drains, and waterlogged streets during periods of intense rainfall.

The IMD has also forecast thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds across parts of the Mumbai region during the alert period. Fisherfolk have been strictly advised not to venture into the sea until conditions improve, while residents have been encouraged to follow real-time updates and safety advisories issued by local authorities.

A red alert, the highest level in the IMD’s warning system, indicates a high likelihood of severe weather capable of causing significant disruption to daily life. Authorities have reiterated that emergency services are on standby and have appealed to citizens to cooperate with civic agencies until weather conditions stabilise.
