Mumbai CNG Price Hike: Rs 2 Per kg Rise Hits 12 Lakh Vehicles Again

MGL raises Mumbai CNG to Rs 86 per kg effective May 30 at midnight.

Commuters and vehicle owners in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) are set to face higher fuel costs after Mahanagar Gas Ltd (Mahanagar Gas Limited) announced another increase in compressed natural gas (CNG) prices, marking the second hike within a fortnight.

The company has raised CNG prices by ₹2 per kilogram, with the revised rates coming into effect from midnight between May 29 and May 30. In addition, domestic piped natural gas (PNG) prices have been increased by ₹0.50 per standard cubic meter (SCM), affecting households and commercial users across Mumbai and surrounding regions.

Following the latest revision, the retail price of CNG in Mumbai has increased from ₹84 per kg to ₹86 per kg. PNG rates for domestic consumers will now stand at ₹52 per SCM across Mumbai, Thane, Navi Mumbai, and other areas serviced by Mahanagar Gas Limited.

The price hike is expected to have a widespread impact on transportation costs in the region, particularly affecting the large fleet of CNG-operated vehicles. Industry estimates suggest that nearly 12 lakh CNG-run vehicles, including around 2.8 lakh auto-rickshaws, operate in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region and will be directly impacted by the increased fuel costs.

This latest revision comes shortly after an earlier increase that was implemented on May 13, indicating continued pressure on input costs and pricing adjustments in the city’s natural gas distribution network. Frequent revisions in CNG prices have been a recurring concern for daily commuters and commercial operators relying on cleaner fuel alternatives.

The consecutive hikes are expected to add to inflationary pressure on transport fares and household energy expenses, while stakeholders await further clarity on pricing stability in the coming weeks.
