Punjab School Swimming Competition Turns Fatal As 18-Year-Old Passes Away
18-year-old student dies in Punjab school swimming pool incident.
An 18-year-old Class 12 student died under mysterious circumstances inside a school swimming pool during a swimming competition at Shri Guru Harkrishan Public School of Excellence in Shubam Enclave on GT Road on Friday evening, police said. The deceased student, identified as Aryan, had reportedly gone to participate in a school-organised swimming event when the incident occurred. According to his mother, Sunita, she was informed later that her son was taken to Nova Medicity Hospital around 8 pm, where doctors declared him brought dead.
The circumstances leading to the incident inside the swimming pool remain unclear, and authorities have not yet confirmed whether the death was due to drowning, a medical emergency, or any other cause. Police officials said the matter is under investigation and that a detailed inquiry is required to establish the sequence of events. Sunita has alleged serious lapses on the part of the school management, claiming that the family was not informed promptly and was not given clarity about what happened inside the pool. She further alleged that members of the school administration left the hospital after admitting Aryan and later became unreachable, prompting demands for a high-level investigation into the incident.
Police ACP East Ravinder Singh Sidhu said it was unusual that neither the school authorities nor the family immediately informed police about the incident. He added that the case requires a thorough probe to determine whether negligence or any procedural lapse contributed to the student’s death. The school is run by the Chief Khalsa Diwan, a century-old charitable and educational organisation based in Amritsar that operates multiple schools, colleges, and healthcare institutions across Punjab. Representatives of the organisation declined to comment on the incident when approached by reporters.

Authorities are expected to record statements from school staff, event organisers, and witnesses present at the swimming competition. Post-mortem examination findings will also be crucial in determining the exact cause of death. The incident has raised concerns among parents and local residents about safety protocols during school sporting events, particularly those involving swimming pools, where supervision and emergency preparedness are considered critical. Police have assured that all aspects of the case will be examined before reaching any conclusion.
