Monsoon Session: Rajya Sabha Adjourns to Honor Shibu Soren’s Legacy

The Rajya Sabha adjourned its proceedings for the day on Monday as a mark of respect for Shibu Soren, the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) founder and sitting MP who passed away at 81. Deputy Chairman Harivansh announced the adjournment after delivering an obituary reference, with MPs standing in silence to honor the veteran leader.
Harivansh hailed Soren as a grassroots champion who dedicated his life to empowering tribal communities, the poor, and the marginalized. “In his death, the country has lost an experienced parliamentarian and a strong advocate for tribal rights,” he said. No official business was conducted in the House.
Born on January 11, 1944, in Nemra village (now in Ramgarh, Jharkhand), Soren, a member of the Santhal tribal community, founded the JMM and served as Jharkhand’s Chief Minister three times between 2005 and 2010. A five-time Lok Sabha MP, he also held the position of Union Minister for Coal under former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in 2004–05 and 2006. Elected to the Rajya Sabha in June 2020, Soren remained a revered figure until his passing, leaving behind a legacy of advocacy and public service.
