Monsoon Session: Rajya Sabha Halts Over Bihar Voter Roll Uproar
Opposition demands SIR discussion, House adjourned till 2 pm.
The Rajya Sabha faced repeated disruptions, leading to its adjournment until 2 pm, as Opposition MPs fiercely protested the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of Bihar’s electoral rolls. The session, marked by chaos, was halted twice before lunch as MPs from the INDIA bloc, including those from TMC, Congress, and other parties, demanded an immediate discussion on the SIR, alleging it aims to disenfranchise voters ahead of Bihar’s Assembly elections later this year.
As the House reconvened at 12 noon after an earlier adjournment, Opposition MPs stood up, raising slogans and urging a rollback of the SIR until after the polls. Some TMC members stormed the Well of the House, intensifying the sloganeering. Ghanshyam Tiwari, presiding in the Chair, appealed for decorum to allow the Question Hour to proceed, but the unrelenting protests forced the adjournment.
Earlier, Deputy Chairman Harivansh had lamented the loss of time due to disruptions since the monsoon session began, urging both Opposition and Treasury benches to negotiate a resolution. However, the Opposition’s insistence on a fixed time for the SIR discussion led to the initial adjournment until noon.
The protests reflect deep concerns over electoral fairness in Bihar, with the Opposition accusing the Election Commission of bias. The ongoing standoff has paralyzed parliamentary proceedings, underscoring the escalating political tensions as the state approaches a critical electoral battle. The Rajya Sabha’s repeated adjournments highlight the challenge of balancing legislative business with pressing political disputes.
