Monsoon session: Parliament Chaos: Both Houses Adjourned Amid Protests

Opposition demands debate on Operation Sindoor, Bihar SIR

The Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha were adjourned till 2 PM on Tuesday due to relentless opposition protests, marking the second day of disruptions in the Monsoon session.

In the Rajya Sabha, Deputy Chairman Harivansh rejected 12 adjournment notices under Rule 267, including demands for discussions on Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar’s resignation and the Election Commission’s Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of Bihar’s electoral rolls. Opposition MPs, including Congress, continued sloganeering, prompting Ghanshyam Tiwari, chairing at noon, to adjourn proceedings after noting Dhankhar’s resignation notification.

In the Lok Sabha, opposition members, led by Congress, stormed the Well with placards, demanding a debate on Operation Sindoor, the military strikes on Pakistani terror sites following the April 22 Pahalgam attack that killed 26. Speaker Om Birla and Acting Chair Jagdambika Pal urged order, with Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan appealing for focus on farmers’ issues during Question Hour. Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal assured openness to discuss any issue under rules, but persistent protests led to adjournments.

Monday’s session faced similar disruptions, halting proceedings over the same demands.
