Monsoon Session: Opposition MPs Demand Urgent SIR Debate in Parliament

INDIA bloc challenges Bihar’s electoral roll revision move.

Opposition MPs from the INDIA bloc have intensified their campaign against the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bihar, submitting multiple notices in both Houses of Parliament on Friday to demand an urgent discussion. Notices for an adjournment motion in the Lok Sabha and under Rule 267 in the Rajya Sabha were filed, highlighting concerns over the Election Commission’s requirement for citizenship proof, which the opposition argues is unconstitutional.

The INDIA bloc contends that the SIR exercise infringes on parliamentary authority under Article 11, which grants Parliament the power to regulate citizenship laws. The opposition has been vocal during the ongoing Monsoon session, staging protests inside and outside Parliament to press their case. Plans are also underway for a march to the Election Commission of India headquarters next week to further amplify their opposition to the controversial revision.

The notices underscore the bloc’s broader concerns about potential voter disenfranchisement and the erosion of democratic rights, setting the stage for a heated parliamentary debate as they challenge the legality and implications of the SIR process in Bihar.
