Opposition MPs Rally Against Bihar Voter Roll Revision
Sonia, Priyanka, Akhilesh demand SIR rollback in protest.
Leaders of the INDIA bloc, including Congress parliamentary party chairperson Sonia Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, and Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav, led a spirited protest in New Delhi’s Parliament House complex for the eighth consecutive day.
The demonstration targeted the Election Commission’s Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bihar, which the opposition claims is designed to suppress voters ahead of the state’s upcoming Assembly elections. The MPs demanded an immediate rollback of the revision process, alleging it undermines democratic principles.
Before the day’s parliamentary proceedings began, the opposition MPs assembled near the Makar Dwar of Parliament, brandishing a large banner that read “SIR- Loktantra Pe Vaar” (SIR - An Attack on Democracy). Holding “Stop SIR” placards and posters accusing the Election Commission of colluding with the government, MPs from Congress, DMK, TMC, RJD, and Left parties joined the protest, raising slogans to amplify their concerns.
The ongoing agitation has disrupted both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, with the opposition steadfastly pressing for a formal discussion on the issue. The protests highlight deep-seated tensions over electoral integrity as Bihar approaches a critical election period.
