Monsoon Session: Population Surge Threatens India, BJP MP Demands Tough Law
Dilip Saikia urges strong population control policy in Lok Sabha.
BJP MP Dilip Saikia, speaking in the Lok Sabha on Monday, declared India’s rapid population growth as the nation’s most pressing issue, urging the government to enact a robust population control law. Representing Assam’s Darrang-Udalguri and serving as the state’s BJP unit chief, Saikia highlighted concerns over demographic imbalances, particularly in Assam, during the Monsoon session of Parliament.
In a post on X, Saikia warned, “India is witnessing a serious demographic shift with declining Hindu population and rising Muslim population, endangering social harmony.” He reiterated this in the Lok Sabha under Rule 377, emphasizing that India’s population growth is the fastest globally, posing significant challenges.
Citing Census data, Saikia noted that India’s population grew 3.25 times between 1951 and 2011, with the Hindu population rising from 30.40 crore to 96.60 crore, while the Muslim population surged from 3.50 crore to 17.22 crore in the same period. In Assam, he claimed the Muslim population share increased from 24% in 1951 to about 34% in 2011, nearing 40% now, attributing this partly to alleged illegal infiltration across borders.

Saikia argued that unchecked population growth, coupled with uneven resource distribution due to “appeasement policies,” threatens social harmony and development. He called for a “National Population Control Policy” to address these issues, warning that without action, demographic imbalances could worsen.
