Monsoon Session: 8th Pay Commission - Big Salary Hike Coming?

Government seeks inputs for 8th Pay Commission’s salary revisions.

The central government has initiated the process for the 8th Central Pay Commission, reaching out to key stakeholders like the Ministry of Defence, Ministry of Home Affairs, Department of Personnel and Training, and state governments for their inputs, according to Finance Minister Pankaj Chaudhary in a Lok Sabha reply on Monday.

The Cabinet greenlit the formation of the 8th Pay Commission in January to overhaul salaries for approximately 50 lakh central government employees and allowances for 65 lakh pensioners. While the commission’s chairperson and members are yet to be appointed, their selection will follow the official notification of the commission.

When questioned about the timeline for implementing revised pay scales, Chaudhary clarified that the new salaries and pensions would take effect once the commission submits its recommendations and the government approves them. The 8th Pay Commission’s recommendations are slated for implementation from January 1, 2026.

Historically, pay commissions are set up every decade to adjust government employees’ remuneration. The 7th Pay Commission, formed in February 2014, had its recommendations effective from January 1, 2016. To counter inflation’s impact on salaries, central government employees receive dearness allowance (DA), which is revised biannually based on inflation rates.
