Monsoon Advances Rapidly; Heavy Rains Hit South and Northeast India Today, More Coming Soon

IMD predicts monsoon arrival within days as heavy rains hit regions.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast widespread rainfall across several parts of the country in the coming days, raising hopes of relief from the intense heatwave conditions affecting many regions. According to the weather department, conditions are becoming favorable for the further advance of the southwest monsoon over parts of the Arabian Sea, Bay of Bengal, and the Andaman Sea within the next two to three days. The development signals the likely onset and gradual expansion of monsoon activity across additional parts of India.

The IMD said heavy rainfall is expected in parts of northeast and south India on Wednesday. States in the northeastern region are likely to witness intense showers accompanied by thunderstorms, while parts of southern states, including Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and adjoining areas, may also receive significant rainfall. Weather officials have indicated that the advancing monsoon system is interacting with existing atmospheric conditions, increasing the possibility of widespread precipitation in multiple regions.

Several parts of north and central India have been experiencing prolonged heatwave conditions over recent weeks, with temperatures rising sharply in many cities. The expected rainfall is likely to provide temporary respite from extreme heat and improve humidity levels. Authorities, however, have warned that heavy rainfall in some areas could also lead to waterlogging, traffic disruptions, and localized flooding, particularly in urban centers and low-lying regions.

According to the IMD, favorable conditions are developing for the southwest monsoon to advance into more parts of the southwest and southeast Arabian Sea, east-central Bay of Bengal, and surrounding regions. Meteorologists closely monitor these developments each year because the monsoon season is critical for agriculture, water supply, and the broader economy. Timely rainfall is especially important for farmers preparing for the kharif sowing season across different states.

The monsoon’s progress is being watched closely after weeks of severe heat across large parts of the country. Experts say consistent rainfall over the next few days could significantly ease heatwave intensity and improve overall weather conditions in several regions. The IMD is expected to continue issuing regular updates and region-specific advisories as the monsoon advances further into the Indian mainland.
