Monsoon Across India: Orange Alert in Mumbai; Rains Batter Delhi, UP

Monsoon advances across India as Mumbai faces orange rain alert.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast continued moderate rainfall across several parts of the country on Friday as the southwest monsoon remains active and advances further into northern and western India. Moderate to heavy showers are expected in Mumbai, Delhi and adjoining regions, while strong westerly winds are likely to persist over southern peninsular and central India until July 8. Weather officials said conditions remain favourable for further advancement of the monsoon in the coming days.

The southwest monsoon has now advanced into additional parts of Gujarat, the remaining areas of Uttar Pradesh, the entire National Capital Territory of Delhi, most parts of Madhya Pradesh, Haryana and Punjab, along with some regions of Rajasthan. The IMD also noted that easterly wind anomalies are likely to prevail over the north Bay of Bengal, eastern India, central India and adjoining northwestern regions, supporting widespread rainfall activity across these areas.

An orange alert has been issued for Mumbai, Thane, Raigad and Palghar, where moderate to intense spells of rain are expected. Several parts of Mumbai recorded heavy rainfall, leading to waterlogging in low-lying areas and disruptions to daily life. Authorities have advised residents to remain cautious, particularly in flood-prone locations, as intermittent heavy showers are likely to continue throughout the day.

In Uttarakhand, the IMD has also issued an orange alert for Nainital and Bageshwar districts, warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall in isolated areas. The monsoon reached the state on June 30 and has since become active across all districts. According to the Meteorological Centre in Dehradun, light to moderate rainfall was recorded across several parts of the state on Thursday, with more intense showers expected on Friday.

Meanwhile, heavy rainfall has already resulted in a tragic incident in Maharashtra's Thane district. A 17-year-old girl was electrocuted after allegedly coming into contact with a live electric wire submerged in rainwater in the Mumbra area. Local residents alleged that an exposed and improperly installed power line caused electricity to spread through accumulated rainwater, leading to the girl's death at the scene. Authorities are investigating the incident.

The IMD has urged residents in affected regions to stay updated with official weather advisories and avoid unnecessary travel during periods of intense rainfall. Disaster management teams and local administrations remain on alert in vulnerable districts as heavy rain, gusty winds and waterlogging are expected to continue over the next few days. Officials have also advised people to exercise caution near flooded roads, waterlogged areas and damaged electrical infrastructure.
