Mumbai Rain Fury Leaves Two Dead, Triggers 120 Damage Incidents Across City

Heavy rains trigger widespread damage across Mumbai.

Mumbai was battered by intense rainfall over the past 24 hours, triggering widespread disruption across the city and suburbs and leading to more than 120 civic emergency incidents. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) confirmed that rain-related emergencies included tree falls, wall and house collapses, short-circuit incidents, and a minor landslide. At least two people were killed in separate incidents, including a school student and a man in South Mumbai.

One of the most tragic incidents occurred in Chembur, where an 11-year-old boy died after a large tree uprooted and fell onto a school bus carrying children. According to fire brigade officials, 13 students were trapped inside the vehicle after a Peepal tree collapsed on it. Twelve children were rescued with the help of the bus conductor, local residents, and emergency teams, and were rushed to Zen Hospital for treatment. Hospital authorities confirmed that one child, identified as Vihan Srivastava, was declared dead, while several others were treated and discharged or admitted for observation.

In a separate incident in South Mumbai’s Walkeshwar area, a portion of a third-floor balcony from the Suryaprakash building collapsed late on Tuesday night. The building is a MHADA-repaired structure. The collapse killed 51-year-old Santosh Bhaskar, who worked at a nearby petrol pump. Authorities have initiated a preliminary assessment of structural safety in the affected building as heavy rains continue to raise concerns about the stability of ageing infrastructure across the city.

The BMC reported around 30 short-circuit incidents across Mumbai during the rainfall period, including 16 in the city area, four in the eastern suburbs, and 10 in the western suburbs. Electricity supply agencies were alerted and repair teams were deployed to restore normal services. Officials also recorded approximately 90 incidents of fallen trees or branches across the city, with civic workers continuing clearance operations to restore traffic movement and ensure public safety.

A minor landslide was reported in Kurla West late on June 30, where soil and rocks slid from a hilly area, prompting the evacuation of several families. Officials from the municipal ‘L’ Ward, along with National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) personnel, relocated residents to temporary shelters as a precautionary measure. The India Meteorological Department has forecast continued heavy rainfall with thunderstorms in parts of Mumbai, while civic authorities remain on high alert as high tide conditions add further risk to low-lying areas.
