Mohan Bhagwat: India Morally Responsible to Instil Righteousness Worldwide

Mohan Bhagwat says India must lead the world with righteousness through its conduct.

Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) Chief Mohan Bhagwat on Thursday asserted that India bears a historic and moral responsibility to instill righteousness and ethical values worldwide. Speaking at the 162nd 'Maryada Mahotsav' in Chhotikhatu, Rajasthan, Bhagwat emphasized that this duty cannot be fulfilled merely through speeches or writings, but through exemplary conduct that reflects India’s civilizational ethos.

Bhagwat highlighted that truth and righteousness in Indian tradition are a way of life, not abstract concepts, making the country’s moral framework globally unique. He noted that contemporary challenges like social fragmentation, conflicts, and instability cannot be resolved solely by technology, economic power, or military strength, but require a strong moral compass to guide human behaviour.

“People are inspired by actions, not sermons,” Bhagwat said, underlining that the finest individuals living disciplined, moral, and spiritual lives have historically been regarded as ideals in Indian society. He added that eternal truths transcend time but must evolve with changing circumstances, demonstrating their relevance through conduct.

Addressing development and environmental concerns, Bhagwat said that imbalance is the root cause of global crises. He stressed that Indian traditions teach coexistence with nature, advocating harmony over exploitation. While material progress is necessary, Bhagwat noted it is not the ultimate goal, and wealth should serve as a means to foster charity, service, and philanthropy.

Bhagwat identified truth, non-violence, non-stealing, celibacy, self-discipline, and restraint as core pillars of Indian philosophy, asserting that they form the foundation of social and environmental balance. He emphasized that law alone cannot address life’s complexities, and society must also rely on Dharma—universal moral principles beneficial to all, regardless of religion or belief.

Concluding his address, the RSS Chief stressed that India’s influence should come through example, not force, and that sincere, truth-based conduct is essential for lasting global impact. “Only that which shines within can illuminate others. Falsehood may offer temporary gains, but only conduct rooted in truth ensures enduring well-being,” he said.
