India’s Power Transmission Network Crosses 5 Lakh Circuit Km Milestone

India’s power transmission network exceeds 5 lakh circuit km at 220 kV and above, with 1,407 GVA transformation capacity.

India’s national power transmission network has crossed a significant milestone, surpassing 5 lakh circuit kilometres (ckm) of transmission lines at 220 kV and above, the Ministry of Power announced on Thursday. Alongside this achievement, the country’s total transformation capacity has reached 1,407 GVA, reflecting the scale of infrastructure built to meet rising electricity demand.

The landmark was achieved on January 14 with the commissioning of a 628 ckm, 765 kV transmission line connecting Bhadla-II to Sikar-II in Rajasthan. This high-capacity corridor has been developed to facilitate renewable energy evacuation from Rajasthan’s Renewable Energy Zone, one of India’s largest clean energy hubs.

Officials said the new transmission line will enable the evacuation of an additional 1,100 MW of renewable power from the Bhadla, Ramgarh, and Fatehgarh solar complexes. The project is expected to significantly improve grid stability while ensuring efficient integration of large-scale solar generation into the national network.

Since April 2014, India’s transmission infrastructure has expanded by 71.6 per cent, with the addition of 2.09 lakh ckm of extra-high-voltage lines and 876 GVA of transformation capacity. The country’s inter-regional power transfer capacity has also increased to 1,20,340 MW, reinforcing the vision of “One Nation, One Grid, One Frequency.”

Looking ahead, interstate transmission projects currently under implementation are expected to add around 40,000 ckm of new lines and 399 GVA of capacity, while intrastate projects are projected to contribute 27,500 ckm and 134 GVA. These expansions are critical to supporting India’s growing power needs and renewable integration.

The government has set an ambitious target of achieving 500 GW of non-fossil fuel power generation capacity by 2030. The Ministry of Power said the 5 lakh ckm milestone highlights sustained efforts to build a robust, reliable, and efficient transmission system, ensuring affordable electricity supply while accelerating India’s clean energy transition.
