Mizoram Finally on India's Rail Map: 11 New Trains Transform Northeast Connectivity

Northeast Frontier Railways launches 11 new trains in 2025, linking Mizoram to national rail network.

The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) has introduced 11 new train services in 2025, marking a major expansion of rail connectivity across the northeastern states and adjoining regions. According to an official statement released on Tuesday, the new trains aim to enhance passenger convenience, improve regional mobility, and strengthen integration with the rest of the country.

A key highlight of this expansion is the introduction of railway connectivity to Mizoram, which was placed on India’s rail map in September. The Sairang–Anand Vihar Rajdhani Express began weekly operations, providing a direct high-speed link between Mizoram and the national capital. This milestone has been widely welcomed as a transformative step for the state.

In addition, the Guwahati–Sairang Express was launched as a daily service, while the Kolkata–Sairang Express now operates on a tri-weekly basis. These services have significantly improved access to Mizoram, boosting travel options for residents and supporting economic and social development in the region.

Several other passenger-centric services were also introduced to strengthen intra-regional connectivity. These include the bi-weekly Guwahati–North Lakhimpur Jan Shatabdi Express, the daily New Bongaigaon–Guwahati Passenger train, and the tri-weekly Tinsukia–Naharlagun Express, catering to commuters and long-distance travelers alike.

Further additions include the Sealdah–Jalpaiguri Road Weekly Express, the Danapur–Jogbani Vande Bharat Express operating six days a week, the weekly Erode–Jogbani Amrit Bharat Express, and the daily Siliguri–Katihar Express. These trains are expected to enhance connectivity between the Northeast and major economic hubs.

The NFR has also revived the iconic Darjeeling–Ghum–Darjeeling toy train service, catering to tourism and heritage travel. Officials said the expanded network reflects the railways’ commitment to improving accessibility, promoting tourism, and supporting overall development in the Northeast.
