Amit Shah inaugurates Northeast's largest 5,000-seat auditorium in Guwahati.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah inaugurated the Jyoti-Bishnu Antarjatik Kala Mandir in Guwahati on Monday, marking the largest auditorium in Northeast India. The state-of-the-art cultural complex, constructed at a cost of Rs 291 crore, spans nearly 15 acres and has a seating capacity of 5,000, reflecting Assam’s focus on strengthening cultural and public infrastructure.
The auditorium, located in Khanapara, is envisioned as a premier venue for large-scale cultural programs, conferences, and national and international events, positioning Guwahati as a regional cultural hub. The complex features a modern convention centre, five VIP suites, and multi-level parking accommodating around 450 vehicles.
Equipped with advanced audio-visual systems, digital infrastructure, and modern stage facilities, the complex meets global standards for performances and events. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma emphasized that the auditorium will operate on green energy, with rooftop solar panels reducing its carbon footprint in line with the state’s environmental goals.

Named in honour of cultural icons Jyotiprasad Agarwala and Bishnu Prasad Rabha, the Kala Mandir is expected to serve as a major platform for artists, cultural organizations, and institutions from across the Northeast. Officials noted that it will also host government programs and large public gatherings.
During the visit, Amit Shah is scheduled to felicitate around 1,000 beneficiaries of the Congenital Heart Disease programme at the new auditorium, highlighting the government’s simultaneous focus on social welfare and infrastructure development.
The inauguration has been widely welcomed by cultural circles, with expectations that the Jyoti-Bishnu Antarjatik Kala Mandir will boost cultural tourism, encourage large-scale events, and further consolidate Guwahati’s role as a key centre for culture, governance, and public engagement in Northeast India.
