Miranda House Students Bang Plates on Hostel Gate Over Deteriorating Food Quality in Delhi

Miranda House hostel students protest poor food quality by banging plates on gates in viral videos.

Delhi University, staged a loud protest on Wednesday over the deteriorating quality and quantity of food served in their hostel mess. Videos circulating on social media show a large group of students banging plates and utensils on the hostel gate while raising slogans demanding immediate action. The protest reportedly involved girls walking out of the hostel mess carrying empty utensils, expressing frustration over substandard meals and insufficient portions.

According to the students, the food quality has declined in recent days, with meals often being overly spicy and lacking proper nutritional balance. Several students also linked the deterioration to the ongoing LPG crisis, which they claim has affected the preparation of fresh and adequate meals. Social media videos highlighted the intensity of the protest, with repeated banging of plates drawing attention to their grievances.

The college administration, however, denied allegations of substandard food, stating that the protest was prompted primarily by complaints about the spiciness of the dishes rather than any shortage or poor quality. Officials added that steps have been taken to address the concerns, including reviewing menu preparations and meal timings to ensure student satisfaction.

The All India Students’ Association (AISA) expressed solidarity with the protesting students, condemning the situation and claiming that students were being forced to subsist on dry bread and inadequate meals. The group called for an urgent resolution, emphasizing that proper food provision is essential for the well-being and academic performance of hostel residents.

This incident comes amid wider discussions about food quality and student welfare in university hostels across the country. Students and activists are urging colleges to prioritise nutrition and ensure transparency in the procurement and preparation of meals, highlighting that basic facilities like food are central to maintaining a healthy learning environment.
