Delhi University Launches "Coffee With VC" to Bridge Gap Between Students and Administration

Delhi University launches informal student-VC dialogue series beginning with Miranda House students.

Delhi University has introduced a new student engagement initiative titled “Coffee with Vice-Chancellor,” designed to encourage direct dialogue between the university administration and students while creating a more open platform for sharing ideas, concerns, and feedback. The inaugural session of the programme took place on Monday evening at the vice-chancellor’s office, where Yogesh Singh interacted with a small group of students. University officials said the initiative aims to strengthen communication channels between leadership and the student community and will continue with additional sessions in the coming days.

During the first meeting, the vice-chancellor engaged with ten students from Miranda House, one of the university’s prominent colleges, discussing a range of academic and technological issues. Singh encouraged students to approach emerging technologies with a balanced mindset, particularly when it comes to artificial intelligence. Responding to a student’s question about the growing influence of AI, he advised them to adopt it as a supportive tool rather than allowing it to dominate their work or thinking. According to Singh, technological advancements should empower individuals while enhancing their learning and creativity.

Emphasising the significance of technological progress, Singh highlighted how new innovations often generate both excitement and concern among society. He told students that while such changes can appear disruptive, they also open opportunities for growth and innovation if used responsibly. Referring to India’s achievements in digital infrastructure, he pointed to systems such as the widely used Unified Payments Interface as an example of the country’s rapid technological development and its ability to lead global innovation in the digital economy.

The vice-chancellor also addressed questions regarding Value Addition Courses (VACs) and Skill Enhancement Courses (SECs), which form part of the university’s broader academic framework. Singh explained that the goal of higher education goes beyond classroom learning and professional preparation. According to him, universities must also nurture responsible citizens by cultivating ethical values, social awareness, and a sense of commitment to the nation. He noted that courses focused on skills and personal development help students become well-rounded individuals capable of contributing meaningfully to society.

Speaking about the broader national context, Singh told students that the 21st century presents both complex challenges and unprecedented opportunities for young people. He referred to the vision articulated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to transform India into a developed nation by 2047, marking a century of independence. Achieving that goal, he said, will require talented and motivated youth who are prepared to apply their knowledge and creativity toward national progress. Singh also emphasised the important role of women in this transformation, stating that “brilliant daughters” will be crucial to shaping the country’s future.

In addition to academic discussions, Singh spoke about ongoing efforts to improve campus safety and infrastructure. He said arrangements are being made to install CCTV cameras across university premises to ensure a secure environment for students and staff. The session was moderated by Rani Abbi, director of the university’s South Campus, who said the “Coffee with Vice-Chancellor” programme is intended to give students a direct platform to express their opinions and raise concerns before the administration. University officials said similar interactive sessions will be organised regularly to strengthen engagement and transparency within the institution.
