Meghalaya’s First Indigenous Woman Chief Secretary Rebecca Suchiang Dies

Meghalaya’s first tribal woman Chief Secretary, Rebecca V. Suchiang, died on Tuesday while undergoing medical treatment after battling cancer for more than two years, officials said. Suchiang, who had been unwell for some time, was receiving medical care before her death. Her demise has triggered an outpouring of grief among political leaders, civil servants and people across the state.

Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma expressed deep sorrow over Suchiang’s death and remembered her as a highly respected civil servant whose career was marked by dedication to public service. In his condolence message, Sangma recalled her leadership during challenging periods and praised her ability to take firm decisions while maintaining the confidence of colleagues and guiding junior officers.

Sangma also highlighted Suchiang’s determination during her prolonged illness, noting that she continued to discharge her responsibilities despite serious health challenges. He described her as a resilient officer who remained committed to public service and said her contribution to Meghalaya’s administration would remain an important part of the state’s history. He conveyed his condolences to her family, friends and loved ones.

Suchiang made history when she assumed charge as Meghalaya Chief Secretary on September 30, 2021. A 1989-batch IAS officer of the Assam-Meghalaya cadre, she became the first Khasi woman and the first indigenous tribal woman to occupy the state’s highest bureaucratic position. Her elevation was regarded as a significant milestone for Meghalaya and represented a notable moment in the state’s administrative history.

During her long career in the Indian Administrative Service, Suchiang served in several administrative capacities and worked across different departments of the Meghalaya government. Her tenure was marked by involvement in the functioning of the state administration and governance at various levels. Colleagues and civil service members have remembered her for her leadership, professional commitment and contribution to public administration.

Suchiang’s death marks the loss of a pioneering administrator who broke a significant barrier by becoming Meghalaya’s first indigenous tribal woman Chief Secretary. Her career and public service have left a lasting mark on the state’s administrative establishment.
