MEA Prioritises Safety of Indians as West Asia Tensions Escalate

MEA urges restraint, says safety of Indians in West Asia remains priority.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Tuesday expressed deep concern over the intensifying conflict in West Asia, stating that the safety of nearly one crore Indians living in the region remains the government’s top priority. The escalation began on February 28 following joint military strikes by the United States and Israel on Iran, triggering a sharp deterioration in regional security.

In an official statement, MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said India had urged all parties from the outset to exercise restraint, prevent further escalation and prioritise civilian safety. He reiterated that New Delhi continues to call for a return to dialogue and diplomacy as the only viable path forward. The ministry emphasised that it is closely monitoring developments and maintaining active communication with Indian missions across affected areas.

The MEA confirmed that all Indian embassies and consulates in the region remain in constant touch with the Indian diaspora, providing advisories and assistance where required. Authorities are assessing contingency plans in coordination with host governments and airlines to ensure the safe movement of citizens if the security situation worsens. With a significant Indian workforce spread across Gulf and West Asian nations, any prolonged instability carries direct humanitarian and economic implications.

The statement comes amid heightened tensions following reports of sustained military action and leadership casualties in Iran, including the death of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei during the ongoing hostilities. While refraining from commenting on specific military developments, India underscored the importance of stability in a region critical to global energy supplies and the welfare of millions of expatriates. The government said it will continue to review the situation and take appropriate measures to safeguard Indian nationals abroad.
