MCD Removes Unauthorised Structures From Parks Around Jama Masjid on Delhi HC Directions

The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has launched an encroachment removal drive around the Jama Masjid area in Old Delhi, targeting unauthorised temporary structures in public parks near the historic monument. Civic officials said the action was carried out as part of efforts to restore and protect public spaces. The operation focused on three parks in the area, where MCD teams removed structures identified as unauthorised.

According to the MCD, the enforcement action was undertaken in compliance with directions issued by the Delhi High Court concerning encroachments in and around Jama Masjid. The civic body said its teams acted to recover public spaces and ensure that parks in the area remained available for their intended purpose. Officials also said the operation was conducted peacefully, with cooperation from the concerned stakeholders and authorities.

An MCD spokesperson said the enforcement exercise was specifically focused on park areas surrounding Jama Masjid under the Old Delhi Zone. The civic teams removed certain temporary structures that had been built without authorisation. Maintenance department personnel were deployed during the operation to assist with clearing the affected areas and restoring the public spaces.

Following the demolition, MCD teams began clearing the debris from the sites. Officials said the clearance work was necessary to protect public land and maintain the parks. The civic body is expected to continue enforcement and related maintenance activities in accordance with the directions issued by the court.

The Delhi High Court had earlier directed authorities to examine encroachments and constructions in and around the Jama Masjid premises. The court had said that if illegal construction was found, appropriate action under the law should follow. The MCD was subsequently directed to conduct a comprehensive survey of constructions around the monument and initiate statutory action against unauthorised structures identified during the exercise.

The latest operation is therefore part of a broader effort to address encroachments around one of Old Delhi's most prominent heritage landmarks. The MCD said its enforcement and debris-clearance activities are aimed at safeguarding public land and keeping the surrounding parks accessible and properly maintained. Further action may follow based on the findings of surveys and inspections in the area.
