Mayawati Calls 130th Amendment Bill Threat to Democracy

BSP chief urges rethink on controversial amendment bill.

Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) supremo Mayawati has launched a scathing attack on the 130th Constitutional Amendment Bill, labeling it a dangerous move to "weaken democracy" in India. The bill, introduced by Union Home Minister Amit Shah in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday amidst fierce protests, allows for the temporary removal of the prime minister, chief ministers, and other ministers for 30 days if arrested on serious charges. Mayawati’s sharp critique, posted on X, reflects growing concerns over the legislation’s potential to destabilize India’s democratic framework.

In her statement, the former Uttar Pradesh chief minister warned that the bill could be misused by ruling parties for political gain, driven by "selfishness and animosity." She argued that in the current political climate, the legislation poses a significant threat to the principles of the Constitution and democratic governance. “Our party does not agree with this Bill at all,” Mayawati declared, urging the central government to reconsider the proposal in the interest of the nation’s democratic integrity.

The bill’s introduction in the Lok Sabha sparked immediate outrage from Opposition members, who condemned it as an assault on federalism and the spirit of the Constitution. Protests erupted in the House, with lawmakers accusing the government of pushing a divisive agenda. The contentious legislation seeks to enforce a 30-day suspension for constitutional officeholders facing serious charges, a move Shah defended as essential for upholding moral standards in public life. “We cannot be so shameless that we continue to occupy Constitutional positions while facing serious charges,” Shah asserted in response to the criticism.

Mayawati’s opposition underscores broader anxieties about the bill’s implications, with critics warning it could be weaponized to target political rivals. The BSP leader’s call for introspection has added fuel to the ongoing debate, as political analysts question whether the government will heed demands for reconsideration or push forward with the controversial amendment. As tensions escalate, the bill’s fate remains uncertain, with the potential to reshape India’s political landscape.

The public, too, has expressed apprehension, with many fearing the legislation could erode democratic checks and balances. With the Opposition vowing to resist, the 130th Constitutional Amendment Bill has ignited a firestorm, casting a shadow over the government’s legislative agenda and raising critical questions about the future of governance in India.
