Mark Tully, Legendary Journalist of India, Passes Away at 90

Veteran journalist and BBC India chronicler Sir Mark Tully passed away at 90 in Delhi.

Veteran journalist and acclaimed author Mark Tully passed away on Sunday at a private hospital in New Delhi after a prolonged illness. He was 90. A close friend confirmed that Tully had been admitted to Max Hospital in Saket for the past week, where he was undergoing treatment under the nephrology department.

Born in Calcutta (now Kolkata) on October 24, 1935, Mark Tully went on to become one of the most influential foreign journalists to report on India. He served as the New Delhi Bureau Chief of the BBC for 22 years, during which he earned widespread respect for his deep understanding of Indian society, politics, and culture.

Tully was known for his nuanced reporting and ability to interpret India beyond headlines, often focusing on ordinary lives and grassroots realities. His long association with the BBC made him a familiar and trusted voice for global audiences seeking insight into the subcontinent.

An accomplished author, Tully wrote several critically acclaimed books on India, including No Full Stops in India, India in Slow Motion, and The Heart of India. His works offered thoughtful reflections on India’s social and political transformations, blending journalism with storytelling.

Beyond print, Tully was also a familiar presence on radio and television. He presented the BBC Radio 4 programme Something Understood and contributed to numerous documentaries covering themes such as the British Raj, Indian democracy, and the Indian Railways.

In recognition of his contributions to journalism and his deep engagement with India, Tully was knighted in 2002 and awarded the Padma Bhushan by the Government of India in 2005. His passing marks the end of an era, but his writings and broadcasts continue to stand as a lasting testament to his unique bond with India.
