PM Modi Condemns Attack on Woman Journalist Amid Beldanga Violence in West Bengal

PM Modi condemns attack on woman journalist amid Beldanga unrest.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday strongly condemned the alleged assault on a female journalist during recent unrest in Beldanga, Murshidabad, urging women and youth to take the lead in ending a “climate of fear and intimidation” in West Bengal under the Trinamool Congress (TMC) government. Modi alleged that journalists and ordinary citizens are unsafe and criticized the state administration for failing to protect women.

The Beldanga violence erupted after the death of 36-year-old migrant worker Alauddin Sheikh in Jharkhand. Protesters blocked the Sealdah-Lalgola railway line and set tyres ablaze on National Highway 12, disrupting road and rail traffic for over five hours. Clashes during the unrest resulted in at least 12 people, including journalists and police personnel, being injured.

A woman journalist was reportedly assaulted while covering the violence, and another sustained serious injuries requiring hospitalization at Murshidabad Medical College and Hospital. Political parties across West Bengal have condemned the attacks, highlighting concerns over the safety of media personnel during unrest.

Responding to Modi’s remarks, senior TMC leader Kunal Ghosh challenged the Prime Minister to address sexual harassment allegations against BJP MP Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh in 2023. Ghosh insisted that women are safe in West Bengal and questioned the safety of women under BJP rule in other states, citing Singh’s unresolved case.

Despite efforts by the district administration and appeals from Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to maintain calm, tensions resurfaced following reports that another migrant worker from Beldanga was allegedly beaten in Ghazipur, Bihar. Security has been reinforced in the area to prevent further escalation, while police investigations into the violence and journalist attacks continue.

The incident has reignited political debate over law and order, women’s safety, and media freedom in West Bengal, highlighting the ongoing tensions ahead of upcoming elections and raising questions about protection measures for vulnerable communities and frontline reporters.
