Marathwada Drowns in 113% Rainfall Surge, Nanded Hit Hardest!
Marathwada hit by 113% rainfall; Nanded faces deadly floods and crop loss.
The Marathwada region, encompassing eight districts, has experienced an extraordinary monsoon season, recording 113% of its average rainfall since June 1, according to official data from the divisional commissioner’s office.
The districts of Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Jalna, Beed, Latur, Dharashiv, Parbhani, Hingoli, and Nanded have collectively received 594.7 mm of rainfall against an expected average of 524.6 mm for this period, accounting for 87% of the total monsoon season’s expected rainfall (June 1 to September 30). This above-average rainfall has brought both relief and challenges to the region, particularly in areas hit by extreme weather events.
Nanded district emerged as the epicenter of this wet spell, recording the highest rainfall at 820 mm, a staggering 24.6% above its average of 658 mm. The heavy downpours triggered devastating flash floods in parts of Nanded last month, leading to loss of life, significant crop damage, and disruption of livelihoods.
The floods have raised concerns about agricultural recovery and infrastructure resilience in the district, with local authorities assessing the extent of the damage to provide relief to affected communities.
In contrast, Parbhani district recorded below-average rainfall at 572.6 mm, equivalent to 94.9% of its expected 603.6 mm, making it the least affected by the monsoon’s intensity. While the surplus rainfall across Marathwada has replenished water reservoirs and supported agriculture in some areas, the uneven distribution and extreme weather events underscore the need for improved flood management and agricultural support systems to mitigate future risks.
