Marathwada: 49 Areas Hit with Heavy Rain, Sindgi Records 255 mm

Torrential rains flood 49 revenue circles in drought-prone Marathwada, boosting water reserves but raising concerns.

Heavy rainfall battered 49 revenue circles across Marathwada, with Sindgi in Nanded’s Kinwat tehsil recording an unprecedented 255 mm in the 24 hours ending at 6:00 AM on Sunday, according to district officials.

The deluge, affecting Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Jalna, Nanded, and Hingoli districts, marks a significant event in the drought-prone region, with other areas like Savladbara (126.75 mm), Kalmanuri and Wakodi (122.5 mm), and Bhokardan (68.75 mm) also experiencing substantial downpours.

The intense rainfall has significantly increased water storage in Marathwada’s 11 major irrigation projects, reaching 88.46% capacity compared to just 34% on the same day last year. This surge has prompted water discharge from the Manjara, Penganga, Siddheshwar, and Vishnupuri dams to manage reservoir levels, officials reported.

While the rains bring relief to the water-scarce region, the excessive downpour raises concerns about potential flooding and crop damage, with authorities closely monitoring the situation to mitigate risks in the affected areas.
