Manipur CM Reviews Security Situation, Seeks Early Resumption Of Inter-State Buses

Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh on Monday chaired a Combined Headquarters (Unified Command) security meeting to review the state’s law-and-order situation and strengthen security arrangements. The meeting at the Civil Secretariat focused on maintaining peace, improving coordination among security agencies and ensuring safe movement of people and goods across the state.

Officials said the meeting extensively reviewed the security situation along Manipur’s National Highways, particularly NH-37 and NH-2. The Imphal-Jiribam and Imphal-Dimapur highways are crucial transport corridors connecting the landlocked state with the rest of the country. Movement along NH-2, which passes through Kangpokpi district, has faced prolonged disruptions since ethnic violence began in May 2023, affecting commuters and the supply of essential commodities.

The meeting was attended by Chief Secretary Puneet Kumar Goel, Chief Security Advisor Kuldiep Singh, Director General of Police Mukesh Singh and senior officers from the state police, Assam Rifles, Army and Central Reserve Police Force. Intelligence agencies, Central Armed Police Forces and other security organisations operating in the state also participated. Discussions covered intelligence gathering, security preparedness and coordination among various agencies.

After the Unified Command meeting, Singh chaired another high-level discussion with senior security officials and representatives of transporters on the early resumption of inter-state bus services. The meeting examined security arrangements and confidence-building measures required to facilitate the safe operation of passenger services on the Imphal-Guwahati and Imphal-Dimapur routes.

The proposed resumption of the two services was jointly announced by Singh, Deputy Chief Minister Nemcha Kipgen and Independent MLA Haokholet Kipgen during a programme at Kangpokpi district headquarters on August 8. Restarting the services is expected to improve connectivity between Manipur and neighbouring Assam and Nagaland after prolonged disruptions linked to the ethnic unrest.

The latest security review comes as the state government continues efforts to restore normalcy and public confidence. Officials noted that no major incident of violence had been reported in Manipur for nearly two months, while security agencies continue operations against militant groups and other threats. The government is also focusing on securing transport corridors and facilitating the movement of passengers and essential goods across the state.
