Mamata Banerjee Says Outsiders Were Brought In During Assam Assembly Elections
Mamata Banerjee alleges BJP brought outsiders to Assam polls and questions electoral roll deletions.
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Friday levelled a series of allegations against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), claiming that the party brought in people from outside Assam during the recently held Assembly elections. She made the remarks while addressing a public rally in Tentulia in North 24 Parganas district, a day after voting concluded for the 126-member Assam Assembly.
Banerjee alleged that the BJP transported around 50,000 people from Uttar Pradesh to Assam by train, suggesting that the ruling party at the Centre was not confident of winning based on the votes of local residents alone. She further accused the BJP of using external influence to sway electoral outcomes in the northeastern state.
Extending her criticism to broader institutions, Banerjee claimed that no agency in the country was neutral under the BJP-led central government, alleging that they had all been “bought.” She also warned that similar strategies could be attempted in West Bengal ahead of upcoming electoral exercises, including the alleged movement of people, money, and illegal substances into the state. According to her, administrative officers had already been transferred in large numbers after the announcement of elections.

The Chief Minister also referred to the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in West Bengal, claiming that around 90 lakh names had been deleted during the process. She cited reports suggesting that among those removed, approximately 60 lakh were Hindus and 30 lakh were Muslims. Banerjee also drew parallels with the National Register of Citizens (NRC) exercise in Assam, stating that a large number of deleted names belonged to both communities there as well.
Banerjee further made political and cultural remarks, alleging that migrant workers from West Bengal face mistreatment in BJP-ruled states. She also claimed that certain food habits, including the consumption of fish, were restricted in some states, asserting that such practices reflect broader ideological differences. She accused the BJP of making promises about “Sonar Bangla” while failing to ensure safety for Bengali migrants working outside the state.
Calling for public support, Banerjee said she should be viewed as a candidate in all 294 Assembly seats in West Bengal, expressing confidence that the Trinamool Congress would secure victory. She reiterated that her party would “fight it out” against any alleged attempts to influence elections and asserted that voters would ultimately support her party in the state.
