Mamata Banerjee Accuses EC of Working for BJP and Undermining Democracy

Mamata Banerjee accuses Election Commission of bias towards BJP, undermining democracy, and calls Voters' Day a farce.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Sunday strongly criticized the Election Commission of India, terming its National Voters’ Day celebrations a “tragic farce” and accusing the body of undermining democracy on behalf of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). She alleged that the commission was working as “His Master’s Voice” and actively “snatching away” people’s right to vote.

Banerjee claimed the EC was bulldozing the opposition and eroding the foundations of India’s democratic system. In a post on X, she expressed shock at the commission celebrating Voters’ Day while, in her view, simultaneously curtailing electoral rights in West Bengal through the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.

“The Election Commission is finding newer pretexts in the name of logical discrepancies to harass citizens and deny them their fundamental right to vote,” she said, emphasizing that such actions are “deeply distressing and disturbing.” Banerjee accused the EC of executing these measures with undue haste, particularly targeting opposition strongholds.

The Trinamool Congress chief reiterated her concern that these measures could disenfranchise ordinary voters, including marginalized communities, potentially impacting their ability to participate in upcoming elections. She argued that the SIR process lacked transparency and was being used to manipulate voter rolls to favor the ruling party at the Centre.

Mamata’s criticism comes amid heightened political tensions in the state, with several parties raising concerns over the integrity of voter registration and the SIR exercise. The chief minister urged citizens to remain vigilant and assert their right to vote, calling for greater accountability from the commission.

Observers noted that her remarks highlight the growing political friction between the West Bengal government and the Election Commission, raising questions about the impartiality of electoral processes ahead of crucial state and national elections.
